HIPAA Used as Excuse to Withhold Public Information

Too many times, HIPAA laws are used for a reason not to release information that is not a part of HIPAA. The HIPAA Laws apply to an individual’s PHI (Protected Health Information). This has been a big roadblock for families to get information regarding general information long-term care facilities. These laws are meant to protect individuals and their personal health information. It is not meant to protect long-term care facilities in making it difficult in getting general information or allowing cameras in rooms that residents or their authorized representatives want to engage, that does not identify as specific individual.
